Waypoint is an academic and research hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction, and geriatric care to some of the most complex and disadvantaged people in Ontario. As a 315-bed psychiatric hospital, we deliver exceptional, progressive care, both on site at the hospital and in the communities we serve across the region. Waypoint is the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.
About the Opportunity:
We offer assessment, evidence-based treatment and recovery-oriented rehabilitation across a broad range of needs, including patients who are in hospital under an order of the Ontario Review Board due to their involvement with the criminal justice system. As a result, periodic reports and appearances before the Review Board is a requirement of this work. Some of Waypoint’s key treatment philosophies include recovery-oriented and evidence-based practices in the least restrictive environment. The goal is to provide the patient with as much liberty as possible while respecting the safety needs of staff and the public, and complying with legal requirements. We are also keen to develop physician leadership opportunities across the organization. We offer physicians career development opportunities in teaching and research, quality improvement and leadership/administration. Waypoint has academic affiliations with five Ontario medical institutions and candidates will be encouraged to apply for a university appointment if they do not already have one.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide medical care for forensic mental health inpatients, working closely with other attending psychiatrists, physicians and PA’s, Clinical Directors, Clinical Managers, allied and nursing staff with regard to the safe delivery of care.
- Act as Most Responsible Physician (MRP) for management of psychiatric patient care, including attend daily rounds and participating in interdisciplinary care planning
- Provide assessment, evidence-based treatment and recovery-oriented rehabilitation across a broad range of needs, including patients who are in hospital under an order of the Ontario Review Board due to their involvement with the criminal justice system
- Provide periodic reports and appearances before the Ontario Review Board and Consent and Capacity Board
- Ensure appropriate sign over to the on call team to ensure continuity of care
- Contribute to the daytime and after hours psychiatric on call provision
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Licensed for independent medical practice and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
- Fellowship Certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or other certification that is deemed to be equivalent.
- Holds a sub-specialty in Forensic Psychiatry (other candidates may be considered based on their experience)
- Preference will be given to a candidate who is interested in contributing to our academic culture and who thrives as part of a collaborative team.
- Eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto
- Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation)
- Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
Remuneration and Benefits:
Range - $400,700 - $400,744.93
Our salaried compensation model includes maternity /parental leave, five weeks paid vacation, two weeks paid professional development days, an education/professional dues allowance, and a robust pension plan. Candidates may also qualify for Northern Recruitment and Retention Funding through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Please Note: This position offers a hybrid work environment consisting of in-office and remote work. Office location is 500 Church St in Penetanguishene, ON which is the main campus. Work could be included at local satellite locations including 1-952 Jones Road Midland ON L4R 4K3 and 287 Bayshore Dr Midland, ON L4R 1L3.
